The lens is made from nickel. There is also some great information on petzval lenses.
This is a very special “convertible” petzval. There is a third element which screws onto the rear group which increases coverage and focal length. This is really an awesome feature and something not found often. I would think the creative possibilities with this lens are many.. Id try partially unscrewing the rear element for some additional effects.. With the 3rd element the lens is about a 13-14 inch focal length with an effective speed of around f/6-7 the coverage is 8×10 i would think. Without the 3 element the lens is about an 8-9 inch focal length and an effective speed of f/3.5-4. The barrel itself (not including the hood) is 5 inches in length. Glass is in great shape! No large scratch, no haze, no separation, no fungus, very clean and very clear. The build quality of the lens is very high… This is a fine quality and a beautiful petzval lens. Similar to this one have been used by photographers like sally mann and. Chuck close in modern times, but also by almost every 19th century. The petzval design is not corrected for flatness of. Tokina rmc 17mm f/3.5 lens in nikon ai mount. Also known as tokina sl-17 or sometimes rebranded for spiratone and vivitar.
All in all this is a very fine copy of this increasingly hard-to-find lens! Optically the lens is reasonably sharp at f/3.5 – my $600 nikkor ai-s 18mm f/3.5 is only marginally sharper wide-open, and has worse vignetting!
It becomes tack-sharp when stopped down to f/8. In addition to being cheaper, smaller and lighter, one major strength of this tokina lens is its long focus throw, which is considerably longer than my nikkor. Dslr film-makers know well how crucial it is and will be thankful for this :-. Original tokina 67mm front cap and a nikkor rear cap are included.
